BERKELEY – The 2021 Pac-12 champion California women's tennis program earned several rankings in the ITA Northwest region, including the top spot in the team poll. Additionally, all six of Cal's singles starters were ranked and two Golden Bear doubles teams earned distinction in the final regional polls of the season.
"I'm really proud of the work that this team accomplished this spring," said Cal head coach Amanda Augustus, who led Cal to the third round of the NCAA tournament. "These regional rankings in singles and doubles and as a team reflect that. To have our entire starting lineup ranked quite high in the region speaks a lot to what we accomplished. These are great achievements."
Ranked 13th in the ITA's last national poll, Cal emerged as the No. 1 team in the Northwest over No. 2 Stanford, which is ranked 23rd nationally by the ITA.
Cal star Haley Giavara – who finished 27th in the last national singles poll, competed in the NCAA Singles Championship, was named to the All-Pac-12 first team and had a 12-13 record – ranked third in the region. Other Bears ranked in the Northwest include No. 9 Julia Rosenqvist (14-8 record), No. 10 Valentina Ivanov (11-8), No. 12 Anna Bright (20-3), No. 15 Jada Bui (11-7) and No. 16 Hannah Viller Moeller (16-8). Rosenqvist (second team), Ivanov (honorable mention), Bright (honorable mention), Bui (honorable mention) and Viller Moeller (honorable mention) also earned All-Pac-12 accolades.
The pair of Giavara and Ivanov – which was ranked 50th in the final Oracle ITA national poll, played in the NCAA Doubles Championship and posted a 13-8 record – was ranked No. 1 in the region. Cal's court-two duo of Bright and Viller Moeller, which had a 13-6 record, ranked third in the Northwest.
Augustus added, "I'm looking forwarding to seeing what this team does over the summer and looking forward to a full season this fall with almost the entire starting lineup returning."
