California Announces 2021 Soccer Schedule
BERKELEY – California women's soccer is set to start its 2021 campaign on Thursday, August 19 at UCSD, the first of a 20-game slate. The Pac-12 Conference announced its season schedule for women's soccer on Tuesday including both non-conference and conference matchups.The Golden Bears return home to Edwards Stadium on Sunday, August 22 against Santa Clara.
Cal is scheduled to compete in nine nonconference games and the Pac-12 schedule starts on Saturday, September 25 at home against Colorado, the first of an 11-game conference lineup. Cal will conclude its regular season on Saturday, November 6 at Stanford.
The winningest coach in program history, Neil McGuire is entering his 15th season in Berkeley. Cal also welcomes 25 returners from the 2020-21 spring campaign, including five Bears who earned All-Conference recognition.
The Bears are led by captains Emily Smith, Emma Westin, Angelina Anderson and Sydney Collins. Smith and Westin return for their fifth seasons at Cal after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility provided by the NCAA during the COVID-19 pandemic. Smith was named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year following the 2020-21 season in addition to being drafted with the 31st pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft by Racing Louisville. Senior forward Westin spent the last two seasons as the Bears' leading scorer and led the team in all columns (goals, assists, points) in the spring season.
Goalkeeper Angelina Anderson finished third in the Pac-12 in total saves during the truncated 2020-21 season and earned All-Pac-12 second team honors. Senior defender Sydney Collins is a new team captain this season after being a leader in the Cal backline for the past three seasons. The Bears have collected 16 shutouts with Collins on the backline.
In addition to the 25 returners, the Bears welcome the nationally recognized No. 1 recruiting class of 2021. California introduces 14 newcomers: Aaliyah Schinaman, Aasha McLyn, Cailin Bloom, Courtney Boone, Jordyn Young, Karlie Lema, Kei Kitamura, Marleen Rohde, Maya Griffin, Noelle Bond-Flasza, Alexis Wright, Arianna Manrique, Ayo Oke and Velize King.
