Australia Officially Names Plain To Olympic Team

Jul 1, 2021

Softball is back at the Olympics this summer. And so are the Huskies.

Last night, Softball Australia announced its roster, and not surprisingly, it included Washington pitcher Gabbie Plain, who will return for her senior year at the UW after the Games.

Plain, a two-time first-team All-American and the 2021 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, came to Seattle from Harrington Park, Australia, southwest of Sydney. Since softball hasn't been played at the Olympics since the 2008 Games, she will be making her first appearance.

Five current and former softball Washington players will compete in Toyko at the 2020 Olympic Games. Danielle Lawrie and Jenn Salling, who both competed at the 2008 Games, will be joined on the Canadian team by Victoria Hayward, while Ali Aguilar will play for the United States. UW head coach Heather Tarr will join Aguilar as a U.S. assistant coach.

The 2020 Olympics will feature six teams competing for medals in softball: Australia, the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico and Italy. Group play begins on July 21 and the medals will be determined with the final stage on July 27.
