Augustus, Warren Named ITA Regional Coaches Of The Year

Jul 2, 2021

BERKELEY – Cal women's tennis head coach Amanda Augustus and associate head coach Zack Warren earned ITA Northwest Regional honors after leading the Golden Bears to their first Pac-12 Championship title and to the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Augustus was named the Wilson ITA Coach of the Year and Warren was named the Assistant Coach of the Year for the region. That marked the fourth such award for Augustus, who also claimed honors in 2013, 2015 and 2016. This is the third ITA regional coaching honor for Warren, who picked up the accolade in 2015 and – while at BYU – was the ITA Mountain Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011.

"We're just really proud of the team being recognized in the region," Augustus said. "Obviously, Zack and I don't get to hit a ball. But we worked very hard to develop this group as quickly as we could as we moved out of some of the pandemic restrictions. We're just happy to bring these awards back to Cal. We look forward to having the team back in the fall and continuing to develop this young group during the 2021-22 season."

Augustus, who will start her 15th year as Cal's head coach in the fall, also earned the 2016 Wilson ITA National Coach of the Year award after leading the Bears to the NCAA semifinals and to the No. 1 ranking for most of the 2015-16 season.

In May, Augustus collected the second Pac-12 Coach of the Year award of her career, after she and Warren led the Bears to a 19-7 record and a conference title. In the Pac-12 Championship in April, Cal defeated Oregon, 4-1, in the first round, No. 25 Stanford, 4-1, in the semifinals and top-seeded UCLA, 4-2, in the final.

In the NCAA team tournament, the Bears shut out San Jose State, 4-0, in the first round and defeated Kentucky, 4-2, in the second round at the Hellman Tennis Complex. They fell to top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina, 4-0, in the round of 16 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Cal finished 13th in the final Oracle ITA national rankings and was the top team in the ITA's Northwest Regional poll.

Augustus and Warren's Bears earned a bevy of honors for the 2021 spring season.

Two Bears claimed at-large berths in the 2021 NCAA individual tournaments, with Haley Giavara playing in the singles tournament and the pair of Giavara and Valentina Ivanov competing in doubles. The Cal coaches also mentored six Bears who received 2021 All-Pac-12 honors in Giavara (first team), Julia Rosenqvist (second team), Ivanov (honorable mention), Anna Bright (honorable mention), Jada Bui (honorable mention) and Hannah Viller Moeller (honorable mention). All six also received regional rankings: Giavara, who was ranked 27th nationally, finished third in the Northwest; Rosenqvist took the No. 9 spot; Ivanov was 10th; Bright was No. 12; Bui finished 15th; and Viller Moeller was ranked 16th.

The pair of Giavara and Ivanov – which was ranked 50th in the final Oracle ITA national poll, played in the NCAA Doubles Championship and posted a 13-8 record – was ranked No. 1 in the region. Cal's court-two duo of Bright and Viller Moeller, which had a 13-6 record, ranked third in the Northwest.
