BERKELEY – After compiling a resume that includes 13 years of competing for USA Field Hockey along with international and in-state coaching experience, Manuel Martinez was named assistant coach on Friday by the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead.
"Manny is from a hockey family and has been in the game his whole life," Onstead said. "I have known him since I coached him in the USA men's junior program. He will bring technical and tactical knowledge from his recent international experience as a player and coach in Australia. He infuses high energy into everything he does, which will be a benefit to all of us."
Highlighting Martinez's tenure with USA Field Hockey include being part of two first-place squads at the 2012 and 2016 World League. He also won bronze at the 2008 Junior Pan American Games. He played for the U-18 squad from 2005-07, the 2008 Junior National Team and the Senior National Team from 2012-13. He boasts 30 caps in international appearances.
Possessing international coaching experience, as well, Martinez most recently coached at Hockey South Australia from 2015-20, helping the U-21 Men's National Team to the 2019 national championship. Other coaching endeavors in Australia included serving as head coach for the Adelaide University Hockey Club Women's U-18 team from 2015-20.
A native of San Diego, since 2008 Martinez has served as a technical skills coach for the Coastal Clash Field Hockey Club and as a Futures Program Coach for the United States Field Hockey Association in San Diego. He was also head varsity and junior varsity coach at La Jolla High School from 2008-09.
Martinez joins Katrina Carter – previously announced on Wednesday – as the new assistant coaches under Onstead for the upcoming fall 2021 season.
