@SunDevilSoccer alum Jemma Purfield signed by Leicester City Women

Jul 19, 2021

Sun Devil Soccer alum Jemma Purfield has signed a contract to play for Leicester City Women (LCFC), according to an announcement by the team on Monday.

"I am very excited for Jemma," ASU head coach Graham Winkworth said. "As we put our stamp on this program here at ASU it is our goal to create pathways for top players to continue their careers at the very highest level. Leicester City are in WSL 1 which is the top league in England. I am so happy for Jem. She will smash it"

Purfield had a major impact in her two seasons at Arizona State. In her first season in Tempe, she started the season on the Mac Hermann Award Watch List, the first Sun Devil to appear on the preseason list in program history. In 2017 she led the team in points with six goals and three assists. As a senior, Purfield earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Pacific Region Third Team for a season in which she helped anchor a Sun Devil back line that held opponents to just 22 goals on the season – including five shutouts — while also scoring two goals and adding six assists.

Purfield started her collegiate career at South Alabama where she earned Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 and was named the Sun Belt Conference's Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.

In April 2013, Purfield became the youngest-ever – at the time – Barclays FA Women's Super League player when she made her debut with Doncaster Rovers Belles (16 years, 2 months).

After the conclusion of her Sun Devil career, Purfield returned to England and signed for Liverpool Women in January 2019. She would later join Bristol City Women where she made 27 appearances, including the 2021 FA Women's League Cup Final.
