BERKELEY – It will be a quick turnaround for the California field hockey program this summer. After competing in a regular season during the spring of 2021, the Golden Bears will return to the pitch for their fall 2021 campaign this month.
The Bears begin the season at Stanford on Friday, Aug. 27, before hosting five home matches at Underhill Field that start with the home opener on Sunday, Aug. 29, against Liberty.
The four other home matches include visits from Dartmouth (Sept. 5), Brown (Sept. 17), Northwestern (Sept. 19) and Senior Night will take place on Friday, Oct. 22, against the Cardinal. That match will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
After finishing with an overall record of 5-6 last spring, Cal just missed qualifying for the America East Conference Tournament, but the program racked up some impressive individual accolades. Kiki de Bruijne was tabbed the AE Rookie of the Year, and she and Brynn Zorilla made the all-conference first team. It marked Zorilla's third time being named to the squad.
Zorilla and Maddie Cleat tied for the team lead in points in the spring, each totaling 10 points on four goals and two assists.
Cato Knipping returns in the cage after playing every minute in goal last season. She earned AE Defensive Player of the Week honors in the final week of the season last spring when she guided the Bears to a three-match winning streak to close out the campaign.
