School-Record 20 Bruins Earn ACWPC All-Academic Honors
PHILADELPHIA -- A school-record 20 Bruins captured ACWPC All-Academic accolades, as announced by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). The Bruins were not only champions in the classroom but in the pool as well this past season as UCLA defeated USC 7-6 to capture its 12th NCAA Championship (2020) on March 21, 2021 at USC.
Student-athletes eligible for the ACWPC All-Academic award must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher in the current season. Athlete merit levels include "excellent" (3.2 to 3.4), "superior" 3.41 to 3.7 and "outstanding" 3.71 to 4.0.
UCLA had seven players attain "outstanding" marks this past academic year. Earning ACWPC All-Academic honors for the third time in his career was redshirt senior utility Evan Rosenfeld (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School). Rosenfeld earned "outstanding" honors in 2020 after earning "superior" in 2018 and "outstanding" in 2017. Joining Rosenfeld was Nicolas Saveljic, a senior attacker from Kotor, Montenegro (Maritime School Kotor), who secured "outstanding" honors in 2020 after obtaining "excellent" marks in 2019. Sophomore center Gabe Discipulo (Santa Cruz, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) earned "outstanding" honors in 2020 as well after picking up "superior" accolades in 2019. Earning "outstanding" honors for the second straight year was sophomore attacker Max Berg (Seal Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson HS). Also earning "outstanding" marks in 2020 for the first time in their careers were redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chase Honaker (Plano, Texas/St. Mark's School of Texas), and freshmen attackers Tanner Pulice (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) and Gianpiero Di Martire (Naples, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Francesco Saverio Nitti).
The Bruins placed eight on the "superior" list, led by three-time honoree, redshirt sophomore defender Bailey Jarvis (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas HS). Jarvis attained "superior" honors for the third time in 2020 after earning that level in 2019 and 2018. Senior utility Felix Brozyna-Vilim (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) earned "superior" accolades this past season after earning "excellent" honors in 2019. Sophomore defender/utility Cameron Reagan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) also earned "superior" accolades in 2020 after earning "excellent" honors in 2019. Sophomore goalkeeper Bernardo Maurizi (Florence, Italy/Salesiani Firenze) earned "superior" honors last year as well after earning "outstanding" accolades in 2019. Redshirt freshman attacker Jack Larsen (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) attained "superior" honors in 2020 for the first time in his career, as did freshmen attackers Mo Kenney (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) and Hayden Nightingale (Vista, Calif./Vista HS), and utility Jake Leonard (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes HS).
Five Bruins earned "excellent" honors in 2020 highlighted by two-time honorees junior attacker/utility Jake Cavano (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) and sophomore attacker Tommy Gruwell (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS). Cavano also earned "excellent" accolades in 2019 as did Gruwell. Three Bruins earned "excellent" honors in 2020 for the first time in their careers. That group included senior attacker Chasen Travisano (Glendora, Calif./Damien HS), freshman attacker Ethan Shipman (Huntington Beach, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) and freshman utility Giorgio Alessandria (Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo HS).
