EUGENE, Ore. – The final day of the track and field schedule in Tokyo features finals for Cole Hocker in the 1500 meters and Galen Rupp in the marathon.
Hocker enters Saturday's final off a lifetime-best performance in the semifinal round. He crossed the finish line in 3:33.87 to establish a new UO record in the 1500 meters and move to No. 10 on the USTFCCCA all-dates list. He is the fourth UO runner to advance to an Olympic final in the men's 1500 meters, a list that features Dyrol Burleson (1960, '64), Jim Grelle (1960) and Matthew Centrowitz (2012, '16).
Making his fourth appearance in the Olympics, Rupp is a two-time medalist with a silver at 10,000 meters in 2012 and a bronze in the marathon in 2016. Rupp qualified for Team USA back in February 2020 when he won a second U.S. title in the event. He enters the race as one of five UO men with two Olympic medals: Rupp, Otis Davis, Mac Wilkins, Joaquim Cruz and Ashton Eaton.
