SAN FRANCISCO - The Bruins were picked second in the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced on Wednesday, while graduate student Mac May and seniors Zoe Fleck and élan McCall were named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team.
UCLA earned 101 points, 20 points behind preseason favorite Washington, one ahead of third-place Oregon and six points in front of fourth-place Stanford.
Last Spring, Fleck earned Pac-12 Libero of the Year honors, as well as AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, Volleyball Magazine Third Team All-American, AVCA First Team All-Region and All-Pac-12 First Team accolades. She led the Bruins and the conference with 4.39 digs per set, reaching double figures in digs in all 22 matches. Fleck surpassed 20 digs on five occasions, and was also second on the team with 19 service aces, recording at least one in 14 of 22 contests.
May was named AVCA Second Team and Volleyball Magazine Third Team All-American last season, leading the Bruins with 4.33 kills and 4.98 points per set to go with 30 service aces. She was also named AVCA First Team All-Region and All-Pac-12 First Team. May ranked 21st in the country in points per set and 26th in kills per set, also ranking second among Pac-12 players in kps and pps and fourth in aces per set (0.36). May posted double figures in kills in 21 of 22 contests last season, reaching the 20-mark on four occasions, adding four double-doubles, 13 block solos and multiple aces in nine contests.
McCall earned AVCA Pacific South All-Region Honorable Mention accolades, as well as All-Pac-12 First Team honors last season. She was second on the team with 2.83 kps and 2.34 dps, adding 17 service aces, which was tied for third. McCall led the Bruins with seven double-doubles, adding eight double-figure kills matches and 12 double-figure digs contests.
The Bruins open the Fall 2021 campaign on Sunday, Aug. 29 at UC Davis at 2 p.m.
