Gower Earns Runner-up Finish At English Women’s Open

WALLASEY, United Kingdom — University of Colorado junior Ellie Gower recorded a second-place finish Thursday at the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
 
Gower carded a 7-under 289 at Wallasey Golf Club, a 6,275-yard, par 74 course. The field played 18 holes each of the first two days, August 17 and 18. Gower carded rounds of 77 and 73, respectively, with a pair of birdies in each round.
 
She advanced to the third and final day where the top 40 would play another 36 holes. Gower fired a 6-under 68 in the third round, with seven birdies, and was in fourth place overall with 18 holes remaining.
 
In the last round, she sank another five birdies for a 3-under 71 to finish the tournament with a 289, placing her one stroke ahead of Amelia Williamson and Lorna McClymont. Bel Wardle took home medalist honors, shooting a 280 (78-67-67-68).  
 
"I was so excited and happy for Ellie to finish her summer on such a strong note," Colorado Head Women's Golf Coach Anne Kelly said. "She has worked very hard on her game over the last couple of years and it is nice to see her have success!"
