Guarantano Named to Golden Arm Award Watch List
BALTIMORE (August 19, 2021) – Washington State graduate transfer quarterback Jarrett Guarantano was named to the 2021 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation announced Thursday.
The Golden Arm Award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class. The semifinalists, finalists, and award recipient are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. Candidates are chosen based on player performance on-and-off the field. Former Cougar quarterbacks Gardner Minshew II won the award in 2018 and Luke Falk was a finalist in 2016.
Guarantano, who received the same preseason recognition last season, arrived at WSU this past January as a graduate transfer from Tennessee. In seven games last season for the Vols, Guarantano completed 103-of-166 passes for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for four scores.
Guarantano was a four-year letterwinner at Tennessee where he appeared in 41 games including 32 as a starter for the Volunteers the past four seasons. The Lodi, N.J. native threw for 6,174 yards and 38 touchdowns in his career and was one of just three Tennessee quarterback (Peyton Manning, Tyler Bray) to throw for 400 yards in a game. Guarantano earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 2019 and will work towards a master's degree at Washington State.
The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
The 2021 award winner will be presented the Golden Arm Award trophy by The Johnny Unitas Educational Foundation President, John Unitas, Jr., at the Golden Arm Award banquet and celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore, MD on Friday, December 10, 2021.
