UCLA's Fishel, Brzykcy Selected to Hermann Trophy Watch List

Aug 19, 2021

UCLA's Mia Fishel and Lauren Brzykcy have been named to the Hermann Trophy Women's Watch List for 2021.

The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the nation's National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches. Fifteen players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 30 following completion of Division I All-America voting following the fall season. Then on Dec. 8, the top three players from a final round of voting are the 2021 finalists. The 2021 winner is revealed on Jan. 7, 2022, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.

Fishel, a junior forward from San Diego, Calif., was a second-team All-American after tying for the team lead in assists with six and ranking second on the squad with six goals and 18 points. She also led the team and the Pac-12 with four game-winning goals. As a freshman, Fishel led the Bruins in scoring with 14 goals and 31 points, with five goals and 11 points coming in the postseason alone. In just two seasons, she has totaled 20 goals, 10 game-winning goals and 49 points. Fishel earned first-team All-Pac-12 and All-Pacific Region honors in 2020-21 and was selected to Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman Best XI in 2019. Fishel was called up to U.S. Women's National Team camp in October 2020 after scoring 13 goals and winning the Golden Ball at the 2020 Concacaf U-20 Championships.

Brzykcy, a senior goalkeeper from San Clemente, Calif., earned third-team All-America honors in 2020-21, her first full season as the Bruins' starter, after totaling seven shutouts and a 0.73 goals against average while playing every minute of every game for the Pac-12 Champion Bruins. Brzykcy had six games in which she totaled five or more saves this season, including a nine-save effort against USC on Mar. 18 and an eight-save game on Apr. 16, also against the Trojans. Along with her All-America award, Brzykcy earned a multitude of awards last season, including the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year, first-team all-region and all-conference, first-team Scholar All-American and CoSIDA Academic All-District.
