Wildcats Drop Season Opener at Utah Valley
OREM, Utah – The Arizona soccer team and first-year head coach Becca Moros opened the 2021 season with a 2-0 loss at Utah Valley on Friday evening at Clyde Field.
It was Utah Valley that got on the board first at 18:02 when Nicole Ray took a pass through the middle of the Arizona defense and slotted one home in the lower right corner of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines increased their lead to 2-0 on a free kick goal by Heather Stainbrook in the 68th minute.
Shortly after UVU's second goal, the Wildcats earned their first corner of the match but the Wolverines were able to clear it out of the box before UA could get a boot on it.
Arguably one of Arizona's best efforts in the attack all night resulted in their lone shot of the match by Gianna Christiansen in the 89th minute. Christiansen's shot from the top of the box was blocked and fell directly to the right foot of Quincy Bonds on the right side of the goal. Bonds drilled a shot into the far corner of the goal but it was negated by the offsides flag being raised by the official on the far side.
Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey finished the game with four saves.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Aug. 27 when they host Northern Arizona in the home opener at Mulcahy Stadium. Tickets are available at ArizonaWildcats.com or by visiting the McKale Center Ticket Office prior to the match.
