Makena Smith Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper Of The Week

Aug 24, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal women's soccer goalkeeper Makena Smith was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday by the conference office. Smith joined the Cal soccer team on Friday this week as a backup goalkeeper and excelled in her debut performance.

She was thrust into the starting lineup as Cal took on the defending NCAA Champion Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon and Smith shined as she recorded seven saves in 110 minutes as the Bears earned a draw with the No. 2 ranked Broncos.

Smith had multiple big saves, including a tip over the bar in the last minute of overtime to help preserve the draw. She recorded a .875 save percentage, allowing only one goal to a team that averaged 2.5 goals per game during their championship winning season in 2021. Smith has a goals against average of 0.82 after one game.

Smith joined the team on Friday, having not played competitive soccer since her senior year of high school. She was a standout for Legends FC Club, playing a club National Championship. However, Smith also excelled in softball and is a catcher on the Cal Softball team. She was named to the All-Pac-12 team and the All-Freshman team for softball in 2019.

This is the first Pac-12 weekly awards of the 2021 season.
