Cantlay Wins for Third Time This Season, Clinches Ryder Cup Spot
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Putting on an amazing putting display, Patrick Cantlay won for the third time on the PGA TOUR this season, winning the BMW Championship on the sixth playoff hole and clinching a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team.
Cantlay drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, the fourth time he was playing that hole during the playoff, moving into first place in the FedExCup standings with one event remaining.
Earning the nickname "Patty Ice" from the fans at Caves Valley Golf Club, Cantlay made 36 feet of putts on the final three holes of regulation to finish off a 6-under 66, adding 31 feet more worth of putts on the 18th hole during the playoff.
During the 2020-2021 season, Cantlay won at the Zozo Championship in October and the Memorial Tournament in June. The victory also gave him the sixth and final automatic spot for next month's Ryder Cup.
The TOUR Championship will take place next week (Sept. 2-5) at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
