Beavers Challenge Portland and GCU

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State University men's soccer team will take on the University of Portland on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore. before returning to Lorenz Field to host Grand Canyon University at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6. Tickets are available for Monday's game, ranging from $4-$6. 
 
Last Time Out
The Beavs opened their season in style with back-to-back home wins over Denver and Air Force. On Aug. 27, Oregon State shutout Denver, 3-0. Junior Sofiane Djeffal scored the Beavers' first goal with a penalty kick at the 27th minute. In the 32nd minute, freshman Adrian Molina-Diaz posted OSU's second goal with assists from redshirt seniors Tyrone Mondi and Tsiki Ntsabeleng. Mondi notched the third goal of the game with a header, assisted by freshman Nicklas Lund. Junior Adrian Fernandez notched two saves during the game and tied Peter Billmeyer (2000-03) for the career solo shutouts record at 15.
 
Oregon State grounded Air Force, 4-1, on Aug. 30. Ntsabeleng tallied two goals and two assists on the evening. Mondi notched a goal and also assisted one of Ntsableng's goals with Molina-Diaz. Sophomore Mouhameth Thiam scored the Beavers' final goal.
 
Last Time Against Portland
Oregon State met Portland on Feb. 8, 2021, defeating the Pilots, 1-0, in Corvallis, Ore. Gloire Amanda scored the sole goal at the 25-minute mark with a cross from Joel Walker. 
 
Scouting Portland
Portland is 1-1-0 (0-0-0 WCC) on the season, posting a 2-0 win over Air Force on Aug. 27 before falling to Denver, 1-0, on Aug. 30. 
 
Sophomore Buba Fofanah and freshman Sebastian Nava earned Portland's two goals on the season so far. Sophomore Kevin Bonilla and graduate student Luke Hendel lead the team in assists with one assist each. In goal, graduate student George Tasouris has clocked 180 minutes and tallied 12 saves. 
 
Last season the Pilots went 3-4-3 (1-3-3 WCC). Portland notched wins over George Fox, Gonzaga, and Multnomah. 
 
Last Time Against GCU
OSU last met GCU on Sept. 12, 2019 in Phoenix, AZ, falling to the Antelopes, 1-0. The Beavers had nine shots on goal out of 20, took 11 corner kicks and posted two saves.
 
Scouting GCU
GCU is 2-0-0 (0-0-0 WAC), recording a 3-1 win over Illinois-Chicago on Aug. 26 and a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Aug. 29. 
 
Fifth-year senior Marco Afonso has scored two goals this season, followed by junior Shaun-Chris Joash, fifth-year senior Justin Rasmussen and sophomore Edgar Soto, who have a goal apiece. Rasmussen leads the team in assists with three. In goal, freshman Rafael Guerrero has notched eight saves and senior Anthony Munoz has notched four.
 
The Antelopes went 8-2-0 (7-0-0 WAC) in the spring, going undefeated during the regular season. Seeded No. 1 in the WAC tournament, GCU shutout No. 5 seed Seattle, 2-0, on April 15, before falling to No. 6 seed Air Force, 3-0, on April 17. The Antelopes earned a spot in the NCAA Regional, falling to No. 7 seed Washington, 2-0, on May 2.
