Wong Ranked 14th, Fortin Debuts In Preseason Poll

Sep 8, 2021

SEATTLE -- Vanessa Wong broke into the national Top-20 for the first time while Sarah-Maude Fortin earned her first career ranking as the ITA unveiled its preseason individual rankings on Tuesday. Wong, heading into her last collegiate campaign, will start the fall ranked No. 14 while Fortin goes into her second year ranked No. 124.

The two Huskies will both be starting their seasons at the ITA All-America Championships, the first major individual tournament of the college tennis calendar, in early October. Wong was chosen for the main draw of the tournament, while Fortin will begin in the qualifying rounds. The tournament will be held in Charleston, South Carolina, from Oct. 4-10.

It's a career-high ranking for Wong, who ended the 2021 spring season ranked No. 23. She became the sixth Husky to earn All-Pac-12 First Team honors last year, and competed in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship, in addition to winning ITA Northwest Region Senior Player of the Year honors. The extra year of eligibility available due to the pandemic will let Wong wear purple for one more season.

Fortin is ranked for the first time this fall after earning All-Pac-12 honorable mention during her freshman season, where she played primarily No. 2 singles for the Huskies and went 15-4 overall.
