BERKELEY – California men's golf will open the 2021-22 season on Friday, competing at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate September 10-12. The 54-hole tournament will take place at Mirabel Golf Club (par 70) in Scottsdale, Arizona. The first tee time is set for 8am with the first Golden Bear (redshirt sophomore Costas Panay) teeing off at 9:40am on hole one.
15 teams will be competing at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate including six teams ranked in the top-25 from last season: Arizona State (No. 5), Clemson (No. 10), Auburn (No. 17), Arizona (No. 19), Louisville (No. 23) and Georgia Tech (No. 25).
Redshirt freshman Ethan Chung will get his first start in the blue and gold this weekend after redshirting last season at USC. He competed in one tournament with the Trojans, tying for third at the Tucker Amateur in late October, finishing with an 11-under 205 (68-71-66). Sophomore Sampson Zheng will also be in the lineup at Mirabel after competing in all six of the Bears' tournament last spring. Zheng's best performance last year came at the Pac-12 Championship where he finished tied for 28th with 287 (-1) strokes. He tied senior Finigan Tilly for the second-lowest stroke average on the team (73.73).
