Ducks Close with Five Birdies, Two Eagles at Maui Jim
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – After opening the 2021-22 fall season with a disappointing 7-over 287 Friday, the Oregon men's golf team atoned for that and then some by dropping in five birdies and two eagles on the final holes Saturday at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Led by Craig Ronne's 6-under 64, the Ducks shot a 14-under 266 at Mirabel Golf Club to climb to ninth after the second round at 7-under 553. Oregon's 14-under round was the third-lowest round of the day.
"Obviously, I'm pleased with the results today," said head coach Casey Martin. "We had a tough day yesterday, but how we responded to that today, I think says a lot about this team."
How It Happened: The Ducks played the front nine in 1-under and then caught fire on the back nine, going 13 shots under par. Oregon's four counting golfers played bogey-free golf on the back nine.
Ronne, a senior from Klamath Falls, Ore., had a career day. His round included four birdies, an eagle and 13 pars. He closed out the day by going eagle-birdie to post his first 64 as a collegian. Ronne climbed into the top 15 following Saturday's round and will enter the final day tied for 13th at 6-under 135.
Owen Avrit backed up his first-round even-par 70 with a 4-under 66 Saturday. He bogeyed the seventh hole, but then had five birdies in his final 10 holes to move up to 20th at 4-under 136.
Freshman Eric Doyle also continued his solid debut for the Ducks with a 2-under 68. He was tied for 38th overall at 1-under 139.
Tom Gueant also shot a 68 on Saturday for the Ducks.
Notable: Dating back to last season, five of Avrit's last nine rounds have been 70 or better, including both loops at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate … Ronne's round surpassed his previous low of 66 as a freshman at the 2018 Saint Mary's Invitational.
