Briede's Brace Lifts No. 11 Stanford

Sep 12, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – Belle Briede recorded her first career multi-goal game on Sunday afternoon, netting a pair to guide No. 11 Stanford (5-2-0) to a 3-0 victory over LMU (0-8-0) from Stanford's Cagan Stadium.

With two goals on Sunday, Briede has now collected nine in her career - including four on the year to earn a share of the team lead.

Briede netted the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, receiving a chested pass from freshman Andrea Kitahata that originated on a Cardinal corner. The fifth-year player took the pass at the top of the 6-yard box, spun and fired past LMU's Kendyll Humphreys in goal. The assist was Kitahata's third of the year.

Stanford finished the game having taken seven corner kicks while allowing none from the Lions.

Sophomore Amy Sayer extended the Cardinal lead to 2-0 in the final minute of the first half, flipping a pass through to a sprinting Katie Duong toward the end line right of the goal. Duong did well to keep the ball in play, cutting a pass back toward the top of the box where Sayer one-touched a low shot into the back of the net for her first career goal.

Stanford, which managed 14 of its 26 total shots in the second half, netted the lone second-half goal in the 85th minute as captain Sierra Enge delivered a beautiful pass to Briede near the penalty spot. Briede took the pass on her left foot and hammered it past Humphreys for her second goal of the game.

LMU did not manage a shot in the setback, as Stanford surrendered none for the first time since November 15, 2019 vs. Prairie View A&M.

The 3-0 shutout was the fifth clean sheet of the year for the Cardinal as Katie Meyer and Ryan Campbell split the goalkeeping duties evenly.

Humphreys played all 90 minutes in goal for LMU – tallying eight saves, including five in the second half.

Stanford will return to action on Sunday, September 19 when it hosts defending national champion Santa Clara at 5 p.m. The match against the Broncos is sold out.
