No. 7 Maryland Beats Bears, 4-0
COLLEGE PARK, MD - Battling a ranked opponent for the third time in five games, the California field hockey team lost to No. 7 Maryland, 4-0, Sunday afternoon on the Maryland campus.
The Golden Bears fell to 3-2 on the year.
"I knew it was going to be a tough game," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "They're a perennial top program. We learned a lot defensively. We were feeling pretty good at halftime when it was still 1-0, but we dropped the ball in the third quarter. We were struggling with gaining and maintaining possession."
The Terrapins brought offensive pressure throughout the match. Maryland out shot Cal, 24-3, and gained 13 corners to one for the Bears. Onstead said she was pleased how the defense hung tough when Maryland kept earning numerous corners.
Cal amassed four defensive saves, including Jane Onners recording two for the first time in her career. Brynn Zorilla and Megan Connors also garnered one.
Cato Knipping was busy in the cage, as well. Knipping collected a season-best eight saves against Maryland.
Kiki de Bruijne, Sara Stone and Madeline Zacchini posted Cal's three shots.
The Bears return to Berkeley for two contests next weekend. Cal plays Brown on Friday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m.
