LINCOLN, Nebraska - Sun Devil Wrestling's Cohlton Schultz is heading to the Senior World Championships in Oslo, Norway after claiming gold in the Greco-Roman 130 kg weight class at the USA World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Parker, Colorado native beat out Brandon Metz, Tanner Farmer, and ultimately Jacob Mitchell in the best-of-three final to earn his first spot on the senior World Team.

"It feels really good to win the title and get on the Senior World Team," Schultz said. "I've finished second at the senior level a few times now so it feels good to finally get over that hump and be the man they send to the World Championships. After my first loss I had to have confidence in my ability to score and in my ability to push the pace. That was the main thing the coaches wanted me to do was push the pace and put pressure on him early."

"Cohlton making the Senior World Team is a huge step," head coach Zeke Jones said. "It's the highest level and ultimately it's what you aspire to be when you're little and just starting out. It's like winning the World Series or the Superbowl -- it's the epitome of wrestling. He came to compete over the last two days and brought his A game and was fired up. Obviously he lost that first match where he was a little too patient and slow and I think the adjustment was to pick it up and make Mitchell feel the pressure. Cohlton was able to ramp up the speed on him and those second and third matches weren't even close."

While Schultz is set to make his first trip to the World Championships as a member of the USA Senior World Team, his trophy case already includes two Senior National titles (2019, 2020), a 2017 Cadet World crown, a 2018 Junior World bronze medal, and a 2019 Junior World silver medal.

"I'm looking forward to the competition in Oslo," Schulz said. "Because of the covid pandemic it's been a minute since I've been able to wrestle all of those international guys. Covid has made it harder to go on international trips so I'm grateful for the opportunity and looking to make the most of it and hopefully win a medal."

Schultz opened the tournament with a first-round bye before winning 6-1 over Metz in the quarterfinals and 5-0 over Farmer in the semis. Mitchell, a three-time All-American who wrestles for Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), holds a resume that includes a collegiate national title. Mitchell took the first bout against Schultz 4-2 before losing 8-0 and 6-0 in the final rounds.

Schultz, who competed under Arizona State's Sunkist RTC wrestling club, will be joined by five familiar faces in Norway. Jordan Burroughs, Maya Nelson, Kayla Miracle, Forrest Molinari and G'Angelo Hancock all won their weight classes and will represent the US overseas:
