SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Arizona Men's Golf saved the best for last on the final day of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the season. The Wildcats shot 13-under par as a team on Sunday and finished in seventh place at 21-under for the tournament.
Senior Christian Banke and sophomore Sam Sommerhauser, who carded the best rounds of their college careers during the weekend, gave Arizona a pair of top-10 finishers. Sommerhauser posted rounds of 66, 63 and 68 to shoot 13-under par for the tournament, which placed him in a tie for sixth place. The weekend in Scottsdale was the best tournament action of the sophomore's career with his three lowest collegiate rounds.
Banke's third-round score of 63 tied for the lowest among all players on Sunday and was the lowest round his career, eclipsing his opening round of 64 just two days prior. By tournament's end, the graduate senior finished in sole possession of eighth place and marked his first-ever top-10 finish as a Wildcat.
Arizona returns to tournament action next weekend in Olympia Fields, Illinois for the Fighting Illini Invitational, which begins on Friday, Sept. 17.
