Cal Concludes Non-Conference Play

Sep 15, 2021

BERKELEY – California women's soccer returns to the field on Thursday as they host UC Irvine at Edwards Stadium at 2 p.m. The Bears will follow that with a trip to Long Beach State to conclude non-conference play on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Cal has gone undefeated in five games to start the season as the Bears have won three times and tied twice, while playing a tough schedule against some of the best teams on the west coast.
It will have been two weeks since Cal's last game when they take the field on Thursday. The Bears secured a 1-0 win over USF on September 2, but have not played since as both games last week were cancelled.
Cal has not lost to either UC Irvine or Long Beach State in school history. Cal is 11-0-1 vs. UC Irvine all-time, winning the last matchup between the two UC System schools in 2019, by a 1-0 scoreline. Emma Westin scored the lone goal of the game and Angelina Anderson recorded a shutout. The Bears are 5-0-0 all-time in matchups against the Beach. The two teams last squared off in 2017 as Emily Smith and Westin both started and the Bears recorded a 1-0 win and a shutout.
Cal will have free admission to all home non-conference matchups during the 2021 season, including Thursday's matchup vs. UC Irvine.
Angelina Anderson is now fifth on Cal's all-time saves list. She passed Mary Harvey in the 2021 season opener as she recorded three saves vs. UCSD. She now has 163 in her career. Harvey had 156 career saves.
Anderson was named National Freshman of the Year in 2019 as well as Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and Freshman of the Year. She was the first player to win both Freshman of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year in the conference. She earned second-team All-Pac-12 last season as she's proven to be one of the top shot stoppers in the nation.
Makena Smith joined the Bears' soccer team two days before the game vs. Santa Clara on 8/22. She had one day of practice before the junior was introduced to the lineup in goal vs. #2 Santa Clara. Smith was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week for her performance. Smith is an All-Pac-12 catcher on the Cal softball team, but had experience playing for Legends FC club prior to joining Cal.
She stepped into the lineup and recorded seven saves in 110 minutes of action against the defending NCAA champions and helped Cal secure a draw.
