Men's Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season with Two Tournaments

Sep 15, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. - Head Coach Clancy Shields and four Wildcats will start their fall season this weekend in two separate tournaments. Freshman Colton Smith and No. 32 Jonas Ziverts will participate in the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco, while sophomore Herman Hoeyeraal and junior Nick Lagaev will travel to the Midwest for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Ziverts opens the fall season as the highest ranked Wildcat in the ITA Preseason Singles ranking after going 10-9 in singles in his 2020 campaign. His four ranked wins were good for the second highest on the team behind Freshman of the Year Gustaf Strom. Smith joins the Wildcats after making it to the third round of the US Open Junior Championships, where he defeated two players in the top-25 of ITF rankings.

Hoeyeraal is going into his second season with the Wildcats after spending most of his first season with an injury. When he made his return late in the season, he helped the Wildcats push to the Sweet Sixteen with a 5-1 singles record while playing as high as the No. 4 spot. Lagaev was a model of consistency in his two seasons as a Wildcat with two straight seasons with double-digit spring wins. He finished 13-5 in singles in his sophomore campaign to go along with eight doubles wins.

The Battle of the Bay will start on Friday, Sept. 17 and end on Sunday, Sept. 19, while the Milwuakee Tennis Classic will take place from Sept. 18-20.
