SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal men's tennis team completed a good showing at the season-opening Battle in the Bay Classic, with Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck capturing the doubles title on Sunday on the hard courts at the California Tennis Club.
The pair of Kikuchi, a senior, and Overbeck, a freshman, defeated USC's Bradley Frye and Stefan Dostanic, 8-3, in the final, with each Bear winning his first trophy in the annual event.
Earlier in the tournament, Cal senior Philip Hjorth rode a four-match winning streak – from singles qualifying to main draw semifinals – before suffering defeat. Along the way, Hjorth upset the top seed in the main draw, Arizona's 32nd-ranked Jonas Ziverts, 7-6(6), 2-6, 1-0(6).
"It was a great tournament overall in singles and doubles, and I was pleased to see how hard the guys competed," said Amanda Augustus, Cal's Interim Director of Tennis. "It was fantastic that we brought a title back to Cal. Also, we had outstanding singles performance this week, especially by Philip, who got through qualifying and almost made the final. They did a wonderful job considering that this was their first tournament of the year."
The Bears next compete in the Chowderfest – Harvard's annual tournament – from Sept. 24-26 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
