PROVO, Utah – For the first time since 2006, the Utah men's tennis team captured an ITA Regional Title. Franco Capalbo claimed the ITA Mountain Regional Singles crown on Saturday afternoon.
"This was a great way to start the season!" remarked head coach Roeland Brateanu. "There were some long days this week with lots of ups and downs, but we learned a lot about our team. We know the areas we have to work on, but the guys showed great energy and worked tremendously hard. It's nice to cap that off with our first regional championship in 15 years."
Capalbo matched up with top-seeded James Davis in the finals. This finals matchup featured two players ranked in the ITA singles rankings, with Davis being ranked 74th and Capalbo being ranked 98th.
Capalbo came out strong on the afternoon as he took the first set 6-2. Being up one set, Capalbo battled in the second set before claiming the set, 6-4, and winning. Capalbo became the first Ute to win the ITA Mountain Regional Singles Champion since 2006, when Zach Granger claimed the crown.
