Cal welcomes Washington State to FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium on Homecoming & Parents Weekend, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. The game will be televsied on the Pac-12 Network.
The Golden Bears lead the overall series with the Cougars, 48-28-5, with Cal having won the past three contests in Berkeley. - 33-20 in 2019, 37-3 in 2017 and 34-28 in 2015. The Bears are 7-1 vs. Washington State in their last eight games at home, while Cal is 12-3 overall in the series since 2005.
Cal has its bye week following the WSU game and will return to action at Oregon on Friday, Oct. 15. The Bears' next home game is vs. Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 23.
Garbers Picking Up The Pace at Quarterback
— Through four games this season, senior QB Chase Garbers is putting up some of the best numbers of his career. To date, he is 93-of-140 for 1,093 yards and seven touchdown through the air.
— Garbers ranks among the Pac-12 leaders in total offense (317.5 ypg, 2nd), passing yards (273.3 ypg, 2nd), pass completions (93, 1st) and passing touchdowns (7, 4th).
— Garbers' 66.4% completion percentage is a career high as is his passing yards per game.
— Two of Garbers' career 300-yard passing games have come this season - at TCU (309) and at Washington (319). His other two 300-yard games also came on the road, both in 2019 - 315 at Oregon State and 357 at Ole Miss.
— Over his past three games, Garbers has completed 10 passes of at least 25 yards (5 at TCU, 3 vs. Sac State, 2 at UW), including five of 40 yards or more. He tossed a career-long 68-yard pass to Trevon Clark at TCU.
— With a 7-yard rush for Cal's final TD at Washington, Garbers tied the school record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with nine (also Brian Bedford and Dave Penhall).
— Garbers has 895 yards rushing for his career and is closing in on the school record for rushing yards by a Cal quarterback (931, Joe Kapp).
Offense Producing Big Plays
— So far this season, Cal's offense is averaging 28.8 points and 440.8 yards per game, both highs during the Justin Wilcox era in Berkeley. Cal's total offense yards per game ranks second in the Pac-12 with the Bears fifth in rushing (167.5 rpg) and third in passing (273.3 ypg) yards per game.
— Cal's 8.2 yards per play at TCU is a high for a Pac-12 team this season.
— Cal produced 13 plays of 15 yards or more against Sac State (6 pass, 7 rush) – the most in any game under Wilcox. The Bears had another nine plays of at least 15 yards at Washington (8 pass, 1 rush).
— Overall, Cal has 34 (13 rush, 21 pass) plays of 15+ yards over four games after having 20 (9 rush, 11 pass) in four games in 2020. This year's totals are: Nevada 5 (3 rush, 2 pass), TCU 7 (1 rush, 6 pass), Sacramento State 13 (8 rush, 5 pass) and Washington 9 (1 rush, 8 pass).
Steve Grealish to Receive Glenn Seaborg Award
— Steve Grealish, a member of the Cal football team in the early 1970s who played for head coach Mike White, is the recipient of the 2021 Glenn Seaborg Award and will be honored during Saturday's game.
— Named in honor of the Nobel Laureate and former UC Berkeley chancellor, the Seaborg Award is presented annually to a former Cal football player for his career accomplishments who represents the honored Cal principles and traditions of excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and attitude.
— Grealish walked onto the football team during White's first year at the helm in 1972. He was a member of the junior varsity his first season and joined the varsity for 1973. Grealish earned a letter that year, but knee injuries forced him into an early retirement from football.
— Grealish spent his career in the restaurant industry, operating Shanghai Kelly's, Mick's Lounge and the Northstar before retiring in 2019. He also established Extra Point Club during Jeff Tedford's tenure as head coach and, along with Doug Cole, has organized the Big Game Luncheon in San Francisco the past several years.
Bears Getting More From Moore
— Sophomore running back Damien Moore leads the Golden Bears rushing attack with 76.0 yards per game (4th in the Pac-12), including an average of 5.2 yards per rush. He has scored at least one touchdown in all four games this season with a total of six ito date (1 run vs. Nevada, 2 rush at TCU, 2 rush vs. Sac State, 1 reception at Washington).
— Moore's five rushing TDs were the most in the first three games of a season for Cal since Shane Vereen posted six rushing TDs in the first three games of the 2010 season.
— Moore ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in both rushing and total touchdowns, while he is tied for 19th in the NCAA in total TDs.
— Moore's 26-yard touchdown catch at Washington was his first career TD reception.
Goode Playing Much Better Than Good
— Over his last 12 games, OLB Cameron Goode has accumulated 16.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 quarterback sacks.
— At TCU, Goode had his 15th and 16th career sacks for a combined minus-27 yards at TCU. The 2.0 sacks tied a career high (also at UCLA in 2019). Goode added another tackle for loss, giving him 3.0 TFLs (-30 yards) for the game.
— Goode has 19 total tackles this season and tied for team honors with eight at Washington.
More Offensive Numbers on the Rise
— Cal his producing its highest numbers over the past five seasons in four major offensive categories: scoring offense (28.8 ppg), total offense (440.8 ypg), rushing offense (167.5 ypg) and passing offense (273.3 ypg).
— The Bears are scoring more than a touchdown per game more than they did in 2018, 2019 or 2020.
