Cal Falls To Oregon

Sep 30, 2021

BERKELEY - California women's soccer lost their first Pac-12 matchup of the season as they fell 2-0 to Oregon on Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

Oregon (6-0-4, 1-0-1) took the lead in the first half as they were able to score off a corner kick. The ball was flicked at the near post, but after a couple of quick deflections, the ball flicked off Karlie Lema's shin and into the back of the Cal net.

The Ducks added a second goal off a corner kick in the 55th minute. Chai Cortez played a short corner back to Cailin Shaw who hooked the ball to the back post where Anna Phillips headed it in.

The Bears (4-2-3, 0-1-1) fought back in the second half, totaling seven shots in the second frame, but they were unable to test the goal. Lema led the way with three shots and had a couple of hard-hit crosses, but the Bears were unable to get on the end of them. Cal forced Oregon's Leah Freeman into three saves.

Angelina Anderson recorded two saves, including one instance where she tipped a snapshot over the bar.

Cal played all 21 field players who were active, including nine freshmen.

The Bears return to action on Sunday as they complete a three-game homestand, with a match against Oregon State. The game will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium and will be broadcast on Cal's live stream channel.
