Bears Reach Doubles Semis In Moraga
MORAGA, Calif. – California women's tennis put one doubles team in the top-flight semifinals on Friday at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational, as Julia Rosenqvist and Makenna Thiel won twice to advance at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
Rosenqvist, a senior, and Thiel, a freshman, defeated Sara Tsukamoto and Carly Schwartzberg of UC Davis, 8-3, in the round of 16. The Golden Bears then bested Colorado's Ky Ecton and Sophia Derivan, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. They'll next play Fresno State's Pang Jittakoat and Dalia Ahmed in their semifinal match on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The Cal duo of Erin Richardson and Cami Brown fell in the A flight doubles round of 16 to Daisy and Olive Maunupau of UC Davis, 8-7(3). The Bears rebounded in the doubles back draw to beat Pacific's Danielle Zamora and Mia-Angelina Ruja, 8-6. They'll next play Julia Ronney and Olivia Rook in the back draw semifinals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
In top-flight singles, the 106th-ranked Rosenqvist had a bye in the opening round of 32 and will face Fresno State's Matilde Magrini in the round of 16 on Saturday at 10 a.m. Richardson moved into the round of 16 – defeating San Francisco's Rita Colyer, 6-3, ret. – and will play Jittakoat at 10 a.m. Saturday. The A flight round of 16 could have featured more Bears, but Thiel fell to Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic in a close match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-7(7), and Brown lost to the Broncos' Jamie Schroer in another tough three-setter, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, on Friday.
The Saint Mary's tournament concludes on Sunday.
