Men's Tennis Goes Undefeated in First Day of Home Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Wildcats kicked off the Arizona Invite with a perfect first day from all four members who participated. Arizona went 4-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as they head into the second day.

Arizona's Saturday, Oct. 2 Morning Match Times

  • 8 a.m. (MST) - Jared Horwood/Hiroki Sakagawa (Doubles) vs. Andersson/Roider (GONZ) on Court 1
  • 8 a.m. (MST) - Gustaf Strom/Connor Olsen (Doubles) vs. Schaefer/Sulen (NAU) on Court 2
  • 9 a.m. (MST) - Gustaf Strom vs. Gomez Galvan (GONZ) on Court 2
  • 9 a.m. (MST) - Hiroki Sakagawa vs. Andersson (GONZ) on Court 1
  • 10:30 a.m. (MST) - Jared Horwood vs. Maggs (UNM)
  • 10:30 a.m. (MST) Conner Olsen vs. Clarke (NMSU)

Junior Hiroki Sakagawa put up an impressive performance in singles with a dominant straight set victory. In doubles, Sakagawa pushed through a tough fight with his partner Jared Horwood to come out with the victory with a 7-5 score. Horwood had a tougher road to his victory, playing an intense three-set battle before coming out on top.

Sophomore standout Gustaf Strom came away with a doubles win with his partner Conner Olsen before cruising to the second round of the tournament with an excellent straight set victory. Olsen would follow his doubles partner with a easy singles win to close out the successful day for the Wildcats.

Head coach Clancy Shields looked for the learning experiences from the first dayof the tournament, "It was a little sloppy at the beginning, I think all the guys had some nerves. I'm glad we won and are moving through the draw but I think we need to get better and I think the guys know that. Winning builds confidence and getting your first win helps."

The second day of the tournament will kick off with doubles matches at 8 a.m. MST. Sakagawa and Horwood will face Andersson and Roider from Gonzaga, while Olsen and Strom square off against Schaefer and Sulen from NAU.
