POCATELLO, Idaho – Utah men's tennis players Rian Ta and Mathias Gavelin advanced to the semifinals in their respective draws at the Idaho State Invitational.
In the Orange Draw of the Idaho State Invitational, Gavelin matched up with host Aleksandar Petrovic in the first round. Gavelin cruised to the victory over Petrovic, 6-2, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Gavelin matched up with Umit Ege Canku of Idaho State. Ege Canku reached the quarterfinals after knocking off the fourth-seeded Matheus Leite of BYU. In the quarterfinals, Gavelin took set one, 6-3. The second set was more contested, but Gavelin came away with a 7-5 win.
Ta was the second Ute to advance to the semifinals as he advanced in the white draw. Facing Marcos Zelver of Montana State, Ta started with a 6-0 victory in set one. Needing the second set to win the match and advance to the semifinals, Ta came away with a 6-3 victory.
