TULSA, Okla. – California men's tennis senior Philip Hjorth and freshman Carl Emil Overbeck moved two steps closer to joining teammate Yuta Kikuchi in qualifying singles in the ITA All-American Championships, after the two Golden Bears won in prequalifying singles on Saturday at the Case Tennis Center.
Hjorth defeated Texas A&M's Anish Siriniketh, 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-2, in the round of 256, while Overbeck, a Nos. 17-32 seed, had a bye in the first round. In the round of 128, the first-year Bear topped Evin McDonald of Texas, 7-6(2), 6-2, and Hjorth bested Wake Forest's Juan Lopez de Azcona, 6-3, 6-7(2), 10-7.
The Bears play next in the round of 64 on Sunday at 8 a.m., with Overbeck taking on UCLA's Stefan Leustian and Hjorth facing Charlotte's Thomas Brown. If the two Bears advance to the round of 32 and then win their fourth matches in prequalifying, they would advance to qualifying singles, which take place Monday and Tuesday in Tulsa.
