Gavelin Claims Singles Title at Idaho State Invite
POCATELLO, Idaho – The Utah men's tennis squad heads home after taking first place for the Orange singles draw and second place for the White singles draw at the Idaho State Invitational. Mathias Gavelin claimed the individual crown in the Orange singles finals.
"Mathias was an unseeded player at the Idaho State Invitational and ended up winning the tournament without dropping a set," remarked Associate Head Coach Sten van Beurden. "He played a high level of tennis and backed it up with power, mental fortitude, and determination."
Following a successful match trajectory, the Utes landed finalists for the Orange and White singles draws this weekend. Mathias Gavelin and Rian Ta battled out their final matches for their respective draws on Sunday for the first-place titles.
After a tough match in the semifinal round of the Orange singles draw, Gavelin returned this morning to challenge Lawrence Sciglitano from the University of Montana. Despite having played long sets in the semifinal round, Gavelin took control and won the final 6-2, 6-1, granting the Utes their second first-place title this fall.
Rian Ta set out to play against host Wikus Robbertse after cruising through the semifinal match yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, Ta fell short during the final match and ceded the Idaho State Bengal first-place, 6-2, 6-2.
The Utah men's tennis team will return to the court on Thursday when they host the Utah Invitational, while Utes Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Busleiman return to action at the ITA All-American Championship, which starts on Monday.
