CHARLESTON, S.C. – The California women's tennis team had three Golden Bears win their qualifying singles openers Monday at the ITA All-American Championships, but the trio fell in the second round.
In the round of 64, Cal freshman Jessica Alsola, a No. 9 seed, knocked off Wisconsin's 113th-ranked Xinyu Cai, 7-6(4), 6-3; the 119th-ranked Valentina Ivanov defeated Arizona State's Patricija Spaka – another No. 9 seed – 6-1, 3-6, 6-4; and sophomore Hannah Viller Moeller topped Tulsa's Shura Poppe, 6-0, 6-2.
But in the round of 32, Alsola lost to Pepperdine's 44th-ranked Taisiya Pachkaleva, 6-3, 7-5; Ivanov fell to Oklahoma's 39th-ranked Carmen Corley, 6-1, 6-3; and Viller Moeller dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 match to Oklahoma's 60th-ranked Ivana Corley.
