TULSA, Okla. – California men's tennis senior Yuta Kikuchi won in straight sets Monday to move into the qualifying singles round of 64 at the ITA All-American Championships, and Carl Emil Overbeck – who reached the qualifying draw as a lucky loser – also won his opener.
But Kikuchi and Overbeck fell in the second round of qualifying doubles at the Case Tennis Center.
In singles, the 124th-ranked Kikuchi defeated Florida's Abedallah Shelbayh, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round of 128. Kikuchi next plays the draw's top seed – South Florida's 47th-ranked Chase Ferguson – on Tuesday at 8 a.m. CT. Overbeck, who hadn't qualified initially out of the prequalifying draw, beat North Carolina's Mac Kiger, 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5, on Monday. The freshman Bear next takes on Central Florida's Trey Hilderbrand on Tuesday at 8 a.m. CT.
In doubles, Kikuchi and Overbeck beat Harvard's Henry von der Schulenburg and Harris Walker, 6-3, 6-2, in Monday's first round. But the Bears fell to Richard Ciamarra and Cleeve Harper of Texas, 7-6(4), 6-3, in the round of 32.
The singles main draw starts Wednesday and ends Sunday.
