Ducks In Fifth Entering Final Round Of Windy City Classic
WILMETTE, Ill. — The Oregon women's golf team sits in fifth place at the Windy City Classic after grinding through a 36-hole day on Monday at Westmoreland Country Club.
The Ducks got off to a slow start in the first 18 holes, finishing the opening round in 10th place with an 18-over 306. Oregon improved across the board in the second round, firing a 10-over 298 to move up five spots on the leaderboard at 28-over par overall.
While the Ducks got through all 36 holes, nine of the 15 teams will have to finish round two on Tuesday morning prior to beginning round three after play was suspended Monday due to darkness. Stanford currently leads the field at 7-over par.
How it Happened: Coming off a historic and dominant performance to win the Mason Rudolph Championship in their fall opener, the Ducks struggled to get birdie looks to fall in the opening round on Monday. Oregon made just seven birdies as a team in round one, but came back stronger with 13 in the second round to rise up the leaderboard.
Senior Tze-Han (Heather) Lin was Oregon's top individual on the day, finishing with a 3-over 75 in the opening round before firing an even-par 72 in round two. Lin was 2 over on her front nine in the second round before finishing with a bogey-free 2 under performance on the back nine.
Lin is currently tied for eighth place individually at 3-over par. Bohyun Park is the individual leader at 4 under.
Junior Ching-Tzu Chen sits two shots back of Lin in a tie for 12th place after a 4-over 76 and a 1-over 73. Chen got her second round off to a great start, shooting 2 under on her front nine with a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu – who dominated with a 17-under performance to win the Mason Rudolph Championship – is tied for 27th at 7 over after shooting 3 over and 4 over in the first two rounds. Lu saw her incredible run of consecutive holes without a bogey end at 47 after going 1 under through her first five holes on Monday.
Ducks on the Leaderboard:
5. Oregon – 306-298 – 604 (+28)
T8. Tze-Han (Heather) Lin – 75-72 – 147 (+3)
T12. Ching-Tzu Chen – 76-73 – 149 (+5)
T27. Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu – 75-76 – 151 (+7)
T70. Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen – 80-77 – 157 (+13)
T80. Briana Chacon – 83-79 – 162 (+18)
What it Means: With as dominant as Oregon was in its season opener – shattering multiple school records en route to the second tournament win under Radley – the Ducks were bound for a bit of a regression the next time out. Radley's squad showed resiliency after a tough opening round to come back and move up the leaderboard in round two, and they will look to continue moving up with a strong final round on Tuesday.
Notable: Oregon made 106 total pars on Monday, tied for second-most in the field … Lin was 3 under on par-5 holes, the fourth-best mark of any individual … Lin led the Ducks with six total birdies on the day … Chacon celebrated her 20th birthday on Monday.
Up Next: The Ducks will tee off in the final round of the Windy City Classic on Tuesday after the teams that need to finish round two can play their remaining holes.
