Oct 5, 2021

EAST HAMPTON, New York – California men's golf concluded its penultimate fall event on Tuesday, placing seventh at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. Redshirt freshman Ethan Chung led the way for the Bears, finishing in 30th-place with 223 (+7) strokes.
The best round for Chung was split between Monday and Tuesday as the second round was halted on Monday due to darkness. On Tuesday morning, the Eastvale, Calif. native finished the round with three birdies in his final six holes. Chung was not alone in his success on Tuesday morning as Cal produced its lowest score in the final round, shooting a combined 286 (-2) strokes. In fact, grad student Finigan Tilly and redshirt sophomore Costas Panay put forth the Bears' lowest scores of the tournament in the last 18 holes as the duo each collected scores of two under par (70). As a result, they both tied for 34th with a total score of 226 (+10). Tilly amassed 16 birdies over his three rounds which was the second-most out of the 72-person field.
Cal's final scorer was freshman Simon Kwon. In his second tournament as a Bear, Kwon tied for 44th, just two strokes behind Panay and Tilly (228, +12). His best effort also came in the final round as he shot a 72 (E) which included four birdies (three in the back nine).
"It was good to post a solid final round and I'm proud of the guys for bouncing back," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "The results may not show it, but I know we're making progress. We just need to keep doing what we're doing: work hard, work smart and keep grinding."
The Bears will now begin preparations for their final tuneup of the fall, the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational which will take place October 17-19 at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida.
