Cougars Complete First Day at Husky Invite
SEATTLE, Wash. – Fifth-year senior Michaela Bayerlova captured three victories to lead the Washington State women's tennis team on the opening day of the 2021 Husky Invite, Friday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The tournament format features doubles play against one team and singles play against another. For Friday, the Cougars faced Washington and DePaul in doubles, followed by singles against Oregon.
The day opened with the Cougars' Bayerlova and Savanna Ly-Nguyen posting a 6-2 win over Washington's Nika Zupancic and Sarah-Maude Fortin. The Huskies captured the other two doubles matches before WSU swept all three matches against DePaul. Against the Blue Deamons, the Cougars won a pair of tiebreaker sets as Bayerlova and Ly-Nguyen escaped with a 7-6 (8-6) win over Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva 7-6 (8-6) while Fifa Kumhom and Yang Lee defeated Eleanor Nobbs and Marija Jovicic, 7-6 (7-1). In the third match, WSU's freshman duo of Maxine Murphy and Hania Abouelsaad defeated Valentina Martin and Maddie Yergler, 6-2.
In singles action, Bayerlova cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Misaki Kobayashi for WSU's lone singles victory on the day.
Play resumes Saturday at the Husky Invite with the Cougars facing Oregon in doubles and DePaul in singles.
