No. 14 Ducks Top Bears In Eugene

Oct 8, 2021

EUGENE, Ore. – Leah Schmidt tied her season high with 11 kills and California volleyball battled No. 14 Oregon, but fell in three sets, 20-25, 14-25, 25-27 on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

Sydney Lilomaiava recorded a season best 10 kills on .364 hitting for the Bears (7-9, 0-5 Pac-12).

Sam Taumoepeau came off the bench and tallied a new season high of six kills as California had 43 kills to Oregon's six, but we're out-hit by the Ducks.

Brooke Nuneviller tallied eight kills and 11 digs for Oregon (13-2, 4-1 Pac-12).

How It Happened:
After leading by as many as four points early in the first, Cal took a 15-13 advantage into the first media timeout behind a Bergmark kill. The Ducks were able to turn the tables by scoring five of six points to go up 21-18 on the way to a 25-20 win in the first.

Oregon got out in front early, 14-7, in the second and the Bears couldn't recover with the Ducks taking the second frame, 25-14.

Cal put up a fight in the third, getting out to a 10-7 lead on Lilomaiava's seventh kill as Oregon used a timeout.  It was 21-16, Bears, on the 10th kill of the night for Schmidt when she found the inside of the backline. The home team had an answer again, as they used a 6-0 run to take a lead of 22-21, forcing both California timeouts.

The Bears battled back and had a set point at 25-24 after another Lilomaiava finish, but Oregon scored the final three points to take the set, 27-25, and the match 3-0.

Up Next: The Bears take on Oregon State with a 12 noon first serve against the Beavers on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Gill Coliseum.
