Tkachenko Dominates as Beavers Sweep Cal at Home

Oct 10, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball put on a show on Sunday afternoon in Gill Coliseum commanding a three-set sweep (25-23, 25-15, 25-18) over the California Golden Bears. This is the third-straight victory over Cal that began with OSU taking both matches against the Golden Bears last season. With the win, Oregon State improves to 3-13 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-12, while Cal drops to 7-10 overall and 0-6 in Pac-12 play.
"The difference in today's match compared to any other match this season was having multiple players playing well," said head coach Mark Barnard. "During the year, we have only had one or two playing well. Having four hitters and our setter score significant points was the first time this season showed that we have finally gotten things going offensively and were able to sustain it for three-whole sets. This team has been working hard, so I'm happy that they finally have the feeling of winning again."
Oregon State was led offensively by freshman Kateryna Tkachenko, who had a dominating performance finishing with 16 kills off 24 attacks to hit .625. She also tallied one block and three digs. Senior Maddie Goings followed Tkachenko with 10 kills of her own and two service aces. She also finished with a block and three digs. As a team, OSU finished with 46 kills and a 32.4 hitting percentage.
Izzi Szulczewski continued her strong season picking up the match point with a service ace in the third set to seal the OSU win. The freshman posted her seventh double-double of the season finishing with 32 assists and 11 digs. She also helped the Beavers offensively with six kills. Grace Massey led Oregon State with 13 digs and added six assists and one ace.
California was led offensively by Leah Schmidt, who finished with nine kills off 17 attacks. Sydney Lilomaiava added another six kills, as the Golden Bears were limited to hitting only .138.
