Bears Open ITA Regionals
MORAGA, Calif. – The California men's tennis team began the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Wednesday at Saint Mary's, with the Golden Bears suffering opening-round losses in singles and doubles. Cal senior Philip Hjorth and freshman Carl Emil Overbeck – seeded No. 1 and No. 2 in singles, respectively – along with doubles fourth seed Overbeck and Alex Chang earned first-round byes and will start play on Thursday.
In Wednesday's singles round of 64, Cal sophomore Lucas Magnaudet fell to Nevada's ninth-seeded Matheo Coupu-Moison, 7-6(4), 6-3, while freshman Michael Wright lost to Pacific's Ran Amar, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. The Bears also suffered a pair of walkover losses in singles, with Chang falling to Nevada's Loris Zisswiller and sophomore Noah Gampel losing to Stanford's eighth-seeded Aryan Chaudhary.
Magnaudet partnered with Wright in doubles, with the duo losing to Nevada's Coupu-Moison and Zisswiller, 8-6, in Wednesday's round of 32.
The regional championships resume play on Thursday, with Chang and Overbeck facing Pacific's Coby McCaig and Liam Puttergill at 9 a.m., Hjorth taking on Santa Clara's James Bell at 11 a.m. and Overbeck playing Pacific's Russell Henderson also at 11 a.m.
