Freshmen Earn First Wins On Regionals Day One
EUGENE, Ore. -- Five Huskies opened up their fall seasons today as the ITA Fall Northwest Regionals began at Oregon's Student Tennis Center. Two Husky freshmen, Nedim Suko and Rikuto Yamaguchi, earned the first collegiate wins of their careers, while junior Jack Pulliam staged a big rally in his third set to make the round of 16.
All told the Huskies were 6-1 on Wednesday and all five Huskies earned at least one win today, with Pulliam winning twice, once by a routine 6-3, 6-1 score in the first round, and in the second round via a major comeback from 1-5 down in the third set against Gonzaga's Leon Roider. Pulliam fought back to force a tiebreak in the third set and saved four match points along the way, winning the tiebreak, 7-3.
Suko, Yamaguchi, and sophomore Han-Chih Lin had byes into the second round. Yamaguchi's first opponent was Portland's Oscar Brown, and the Husky newcomer came out on top, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Suko, seeded third in the draw, took out Sam De Vries of Portland State, 6-2, 6-4, for his first collegiate win. Lin lost just one game in his first match, going 6-0, 6-1 past Oliver Fernandez of PSU. Adam Torocsik had a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Portland State's Andrew Vu in the first round but came up short in the second round to Oliver Andersson of Gonzaga, 6-3, 6-4.
The tournament continues through Sunday and doubles play will get underway on Thursday as well.
