Men's Tennis Quartet Finishes Play at UCSB Classic
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Four members of the UCLA men's tennis team played their first matches of the 2021-22 season over three days at the UCSB Classic, posting quarterfinal-round showings in a pair of singles main draws and a semifinal-round appearance in doubles play.
Eric Hahn, Karl Lee, Timothy Li and Max Wild were active for the Bruins, with Lee and playing their first-career matches on the college level. UC Santa Barbara played host to student-athletes from 11 programs.
Lee led the team with three singles wins, taking A-Flight consolation decisions over Nitzan Ricklis of the University of San Francisco and Carlos Ramos Membrives of Saint Mary's before topping Fernando Fonseca of Cal Poly in an added match. Li took down Dominik Jakovljevic of BYU and Georgio Samaha of New Mexico in added B-Flight contests.
Hahn and Wild advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of the A and B singles flights, respectively. Hahn bettered Kai Brady of UCSB before dropping a heartbreaker to Pepperdine's Corrado Summaria, while Wild defeated Bastiaan Weststrate of Cal Poly and lost to Gianluca Brunkow of the Mustangs.
On the doubles side, Li and Wild bounced back from an early Flight-A loss to reach the consolation final round with an 8-5 victory against Arda Azkara and Alex Maggs of New Mexico. Hahn and Lee bested Lincoln Bellamy and Austin Di Giulio of Loyola Marymount, 8-5, en route to the Flight-B semifinals.
