Bears Have Strong Day 2 At ITA Regionals

MORAGA, Calif. – Cal men's tennis posted four wins on the second day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Thursday at Saint Mary's, with the Golden Bears' top doubles team reaching the quarterfinals and top-seeded Philip Hjorth forging into the singles round of 16.
 
In the doubles main draw, first-year Bears Carl Emil Overbeck and Alex Chang bested Pacific's Coby McCaig and Liam Puttergill, 8-4, in Thursday's round of 16. The Bears next face Sacramento State's Mark Keki and Ori Maior at 9 a.m. on Friday.
 
In the singles main draw, Hjorth defeated Santa Clara's James Bell, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 32. The Cal senior next plays San Francisco's Nil Giraldez on Friday at 11 a.m. Overbeck, seeded second, lost his opener to Pacific's Russell Henderson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and then moved into the back draw, with Overbeck beating Jakob Ontiveros of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-0, in the consolation round of 32.
 
Also in consolation singles, Cal sophomore Lucas Magnaudet topped Stanford's Dean Stratakos, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2.
 
The ITA regionals conclude on Sunday.
