USC's Vaggelis Makrygiannis, Marlene Kahler Highlight First Session Of USC Swim Invitational
The Trojans kicked off the 2021-22 season with the first session of the USC Invitational on Friday (Oct. 15) with a pair of Tokyo Olympians, Vaggelis Makrygiannis and Marlene Kahler, providing two of the highlights at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The freshman Kahler, an Austrian Olympian, blazed to a win in the 500y free in 4:43.94 (NCAA B-Cut) during her first race as a Trojan. Princeton transfer Courtney Tseng (4:48.36) followed her into the wall, touching second during her USC debut as well.
Makrygiannis won the 100y back with ease, touching first in 46.87 for an NCAA B-cut. Junior Jack Kirby was third in 48.28.
Northwestern transfer Calypso Sheridan was dominant in the 200y IM, posting a 1:55.76 to lead a Trojan sweep in the event. Senior Isabelle Odgers was second in 1:57.04 and Nicole Pavlopoulou third in 1:57.88. All three Trojans secured NCAA B-cuts.
Junior Harry Homans impressed as he claimed the men's 200y IM in 1:46.90. Sophomore Ben Dillard touched second in 1:47.57.
The Women of Troy controlled the splash and dash event as senior Laticia Transom led the way for USC in 22.43 during her first swim as a Trojan since the 2020 Pac-12 Championships. Sophomores Kaitlyn Dobler (22.45) and Anicka Delgado (22.48) were second and third, respectively, while freshman Jade Hannah (22.90) was fourth.
Tokyo 2020 Olympian Nikola Miljenic won the men's 50y free in 19.74 for Troy. Artem Selin was second in 19.89. Both Trojans secured NCAA B-cuts.
Trojans Victor Johansson and Daniel Matheson each posted NCAA B-cut worthy times in the 500y free as Johansson finished second in 4:19.38 and Matheson fourth in 4:22.06.
USC's 400y medley relay of Sheridan, Dobler, Delgado and Transom blasted an NCAA A-cut time of 3:29.70 to open the first session of the invite. Their time would've finished fourth at the 2021 NCAA Championships. The Trojan B (Hannah, Odgers, Genevieve Sasseville, Marta Ciesla) and C relays (Caroline Famous, Pavlopoulou, Alice Waldow, Adair Sand) finished second and third to complete the Trojan sweep.
On the men's side, Kirby, Dillard, Danny Syrkin and Jan Collazo Torres were second in the 400y medley relay in 3:13.46.
Action continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the second of three sessions at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Live results for the USC Invitational are available on Meet Mobile, and the event is being live streamed here.
