Banke's Round of 65 Propels Cats Up Stephens Cup Leaderboards

Oct 18, 2021

ROLAND, Ark. – The University of Arizona Men's Golf team used a herculean effort in its second round of the opening day of the Stephens Cup to secure second place in the tournament at 4-over as a team. The blistering-low round of 7-under as a team was punctuated by graduate senior Christian Banke's 65, which was the lowest round of the day and vaulted him into fourth place at 2-under.

"I was very pleased to see our team get stronger as they day went on," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Our turnaround was right away after our first round, and our entire lineup showed great patience in resiliency during a very long day on a challenging course. After ending Monday with such low scores, we have great momentum for Tuesday's third round."

The Wildcats ended the first round 11-over par and struggled with the challenging front nine. Arizona closed its first round out on the course's first nine holes and tallied only three birdies. The team began its second round on the front nine and carded eight more birdies before the turn to begin the second round.

The momentum of the day's second round carried over after the turn as Arizona would score a total of 13 birdies to just only five bogeys.

With 18 holes of stroke play remaining before Wednesday's match play portion of the tournament, Banke's fourth-place position at 2-under is followed by Aidric Chan in a tie for seventh at 1-over and Sam Sommerhauser in a tie for 10th at 3-over.

Tuesday's final round of stroke play will be carried nationally by the Golf Channel, beginning at 1 p.m. (MST).
