Jehlarova top Pac-12 defender, again

Oct 18, 2021

SAN FRANCSICO - For the second time in Pac-12 play junior middle Magda Jehlarova has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. Jehlarova was also named the conference's top defensive player on Sept. 27. The third-year star has taken home seven weekly awards throughout her career including five defensive awards.

Jehlarova selection comes on the heels of an epic end to one of the most successful roadtrips in program history as the Cougs were perfect over their two weeks away from home picking up four sweeps. This past week, Jehlarova led the Cougs to 3-0 wins over Oregon State and No. 13 Oregon marking the first time since 2002 WSU had a perfect weekend on the road against the Oregon Schools. Additionally, the sweep of the 13th-ranked Ducks was the first for the Cougs in Eugene since the 2003 season and marked the Cougs' highest ranked road sweep since taking down No. 13 UCLA in Los Angeles in 1996.

With Jehlarova patrolling the middle the Cougs' defense was up to the task as they held both OSU and Oregon to sub .200 hitting as the duo became the third and fourth Coug opponents in Pac-12 play to hit under the .200 threshold. Even more impressively the Cougs held the Ducks to just .091 hitting, a season low for Oregon and nearly .100 points worse than their previous low of .171 against Utah. The defensive performance against the Ducks was the best for the Cougs since holding Oregon State to .081 hitting Nov. 7, 2019.

In all, while it was a team effort to clamp down on the Beavers and the Ducks it was Jehlarova's blocking prowess that led the way as she posted a combined 15 blocks on the week including nine against Oregon. Jehlarova had her hand in nearly every block on the day against the Ducks as the Cougs posted 10 total blocks in the match, the fourth double-digit block performance of the season for the Cougs and third in Pac-12 play. The nine blocks for Jehlarova was her second-best blocking performance of the season and the best blocking performance in a three-set match of her career.

Jehlarova and the Cougs are back in action Friday, Oct. 22 at Bohler Gym as WSU hosts No. 15 Stanford. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
