Race for Change A Success

Oct 18, 2021
Saturday's Race for Chance, benefiting the DEIB office, was a success.

OAKLAND, CA – Saturday's Race for Change was a success. The Cal women's basketball team was joined by teams and programs from across the nation raising funds for their own initiatives centered around racial social equality.

Also participating with the women's basketball team on Saturday were the Cal field hockey, women's water polo, and lacrosse teams as well as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) offices for the 5K walk/run around Lake Merritt in Oakland. To date, the Bears have raised $5760 towards their goal of $9500.

"I'm proud of how our student- athletes showed up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Oakland to support our DEIB office and stand for racial and social justice," said head coach Charmin Smith. "We will do this every year and hopefully those who donated so much in 2020 will feel compelled to join our Cal community again moving forward and make a consistent commitment to accelerating DEIB work. We still have a long way to go."

Created by the basketball programs at UC San Diego, this marks year two of Cal's involvement in the Race for Change. In two years, the Bears have raised over $14,000 for the DEIB office.
